First ENIAC Call Launched
Paris, May 8th, 2008 – The First Call for Proposals in the frame of the ENIAC
Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) has been published today. Mobilizing around
90 million Euros of combined funding by the European Commission and the
Member States for large-scale research projects on Nanoelectronics, the call is
the first accomplishment of the ENIAC Joint Undertaking.
Partners in this unique and recently established public-private initiative are the
European Community, the Member States, and the key-players in European R&D
that are joining their forces all together to boost European competitiveness in the field of Nanoelectronics. Large industry, Small and Medium Enterprises, research organizations and universities, represented in the ENIAC Joint Undertaking through the association AENEAS, largely contributed to the definition of the research strategies, priorities and program that are reflected in the content of the call.
“The launch of the first Call of the ENIAC Joint Technology Initiative, quite
significantly on the eve of Europe Day, marks a milestone in the integration
process of public and private efforts to boost research on Nanoelectronics in
Europe” said Alain Dutheil, President of AENEAS “It is the final act of a long
preparatory process and the beginning of a new venture in European R&D on
Nanoelectronics. Implementing the ENIAC Joint Technology Initiative is an
unprecedented challenge for all the actors involved. AENEAS was founded to
allow European R&D performers in Nanoelectronics to participate in the ENIAC
Joint Undertaking and actively worked together with its public partners to
make it happen. We are now looking forward to continue this cooperation and
are confident that it will result in a further enhanced competitiveness of the
European industry.”

SMEs focusing more on marketing
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are beginning to get more serious about the role marketing has in the running of their business.
According to research recently carried out by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), a lot of SMEs have realised that marketing is integral to their business aims and have started to see it pay off for them.
Geoff Hurst, marketing director of the CIM, stated that many SMEs are suffering due to lack of marketing training being issued to staff and added that courses stressing marketing techniques have been proving popular.
Mr Hurst explained: "All markets are so competitive now that organisations realise accurate segmentation and targeting are vital to give a better return for their investment, but they don't have the practical knowledge of how to put this into practice to achieve results."
Workshops that focus specifically on the fundamentals of marketing have been receiving an increased amount of attention from SMEs, says Mr Hurst.
The CIM provides training, qualifications and resources to more than 50,000 individuals on a yearly basis in the UK.
